The Ugly Truth

Women are emotional. Women just want a commitment. If women didn’t expect men to be perfect, then maybe they could find a man; there crazy! Mix these basic stereotypes about women, raunchy humor, a little love, and what do you get? The Ugly Truth.

The Ugly Truth is a 2009 romantic comedy directed by Robert Luketic staring, Katherine Heigl who plays Abby Richter, a television producer of a morning show. When returning home from a horrible date night -- during which she scores her date on a scale of 1-10-- she turns on the television to catch a twisted infomercial, "The Ugly Truth," ran by Mike Chadaway (Gerard Butler). She becomes disgusted Chadaway and stops watching.

Ironically enough, the next day Ritcher is told that her television program has such low ratings that not even an awesome producer like her can fix it. The solution is that the station must hire new entertainment. Chadaway's "The Ugly Truth," becomes the new segment. Chadaway consistently pushes the line on sex; Ritcher consistently tries to control his segment. Butler finds Ritcher to be a control freak and she finds him to be just plain gross.

After a witty banter between the two, they make a bet. Chadaway believes he can help Ritcher get her "perfect, ideal" man. If Ritcher gets him, she has to get off Chadaway's back. If she doesn’t get her man, Chadaway has to quit. AFTER getting a different personality and a new bra, RITCHER gets her "perfect" guy, Colin. Colin (Eric Winter) is the stereotypical man: tall, muscular, doctor, rich, likes cats, and real hot! But, along the way Chadaway also falls in love with Ritcher.

Chadaway then gets an offer from another television company. He goes to star on a late show for his audition. Ritcher's boss then forces her to skip her romantic week with Colin and convince Chadaway to stay on her show. Once Ritcher gets there, Chadaway admits he has no intention of going anywhere; he wants to stay where he is. The two go out, drink, and celebrate. Chadaway and Ritcher share a passionate kiss and just before sharing anything more, they both walk off confused.

Ritcher went from needing improvement in her love life to having too much in her life. While she has realized that Chadaway's insight may be helpful; it takes her a while to understand the man that might really be "THE one," is the one she needed no help getting.

The Ugly Truth is a movie to be enjoyed on an evening when you need humor and have no intention of thinking. It is very predictable but nevertheless hilarious. Instead of falling to the stereotypes, there making fun of them. While some may be offended by the crass humor, it's really something to laugh at. Overall I think that the movie is definitely worth renting but not something to take seriously.
