A Course Overview for Writing for Mass Media

Now that you have experienced Intro to Mass Communication and learned the history and different aspects of how the media world has evolved, it is time to move on to Writing for Mass Media. In this course, you will learn to be a great writer, practice various types of media writing and understand the core values of your professions.

Writing for Mass Media is a three hour required course to be taken before you enter your major study field. You will attend a lecture with about 165 students twice per week, as well as a lab class twice per week with around 20 students. This year, Professor Kathryn Jenson White is taking a new approach to this course by focusing on the diverse, multicultural importance of this field.

According to Professor White, “the lectures provide the framework to be successful in labs.” At the beginning of most lectures, you will take a language skills or media and news quizzes. You will talk about readings and learn through power points, which will consist of information regarding “specific concepts and skills necessary for thinking and performing as professional communicators.”

The career path you have chosen mainly involves writing and reporting the news through various outlets. The purpose of the lab is to teach you how to understand correct page layouts, grammar terms and how to edit your work successfully. During the labs you will have deadlines to meet and be able to work first-hand with your lab instructor for helpful criticism.
