JMC 2033 Overview

Kayla Schabel

Writing for Mass Media

Lab Assignment 2

Writing for Mass Media, JMC 2033 is a required course for any mass communication major in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. However, prospective students must complete the prerequisite of JMC 1013 before taking this course.

The course is structured into two parts: lecture, which includes all students of JMC 2033, and a lab, which divides students into smaller groups. The lecture is an overview of what will be worked on during lab times. The labs include hands-on activities and a larger involvement with the instructor.

Writing for Mass Media outlines several course goals.  By the end of the semester, professors hope to improve the writing of their students.  Students will learn how to write in a clear manner, use correct grammar, and proofread work.

Students will practice several different types of media writing. In the real world of journalism, one must know how to report all types of news. In JMC 2033, the student will write hard news, broadcast news, advertisements, and even begin to blog.

By the end of the course students will be able to define their personal interests. The Gaylord department allows students to branch out into whatever they are personally interested in writing for. Therefore, JMC 2033 helps students find what area of journalism is best suited for them.
