JMC 2033: Writing for Mass Media Overview

Christine Whitten

Section 15

After successfully completing the prerequisite course, JMC 1013, Introduction to Mass Communication, students are urged to take the Language Skills Test. After achieving a passing score of 70% or higher, then the student can enroll in JMC 2033, Writing for Mass Media. This class is designed for students with majors in the Gaylord School of Journalism. JMC 2033 overlooks the studies of every major in the school of journalism.

Techniques used to write for the media differ from those used in writing compositions. This class is structured to teach students the fine skills used to write for the media. During the semester, students will explore every type of media. By the end of the course, students will be comfortable enough to move on into more “major related” courses. Kathryn Jenson White, the professor, is working to help her students achieve both a professional and confident level in their media writing skills.

The classroom will have approximately 165 students and attendance is mandatory. It is crucial to your grade to stay focused during the lecture and take thorough notes. Class will meet two times a week. During the class time, the professor will teach important skills that will be later practiced in your lab. Every JMC 2033 student is required to take a lab as a co requisite for the class. Each lab will meet twice a week and has roughly 15 students per lab. During this time, students can apply the knowledge gained from the previous lecture. After the completion of the course, you will be one step closer to your major.
