In-Lab Assignment, Lab #7
The biggest challenge I face switching from academic writing to journalistic writing, is being concise.
I have to constantly remind myself to keep my sentences simple. I know that they are easier to read, but as a child I was frequently taught to make compound, complex sentences.
Paragraphs in journalistic style follow the same rule. In high school and grade school I obediently followed instructions to write paragraphs with no fewer than five sentences. However, in a journalistic sense I’ve clearly been told short paragraphs are better.
Although making the switch between the two styles is difficult, it is becoming easier with more assignments.
