NAHJ is a large organization that works to improve their own community as well as their involvement in the news community.
They work to support Hispanics by helping those who are studying for work in communications. NAHJ provides scholarships to Hispanic students. In 2009 they paid out $91,000. They also provide internships and growing lists of important contacts to members of the community.
They also provide a career center with jobs that NAHJ members can see. They provide a list of news organizations interested in specifically hiring Latinos. These news organizations have a partnership with NAHJ and are looking for diversity.
NAHJ also promotes a fair treatment of all Hispanics by the media. Currently they are really pushing the media to end their use of the term “Illegals” when referring to immigration. The word “Illegals” is being used as a noun for undocumented people in the United States. NAHJ promotes the use of “undocumented immigrant” rather than “alien” or “illegal immigrant.”
This website would be very important to a writer and distributer of news because they can see how different cultures view different news. When deciding what news to cover diversity plays a part. By being familiar with others cultures, beliefs, and values, a news industry could have a better range of information.
Cultures have different ideas of what is important to them. They have different issues being brought up in their community and different words that need to be brought up with sensitivity. A news organization would really grow from being familiar with all culture values.
