Sensitivity and Respect

Kayla Schabel

Being sensitive of language use when writing about different cultures can be tricky because of stereotypes. When writing, it is easy to describe cultures by what you’ve heard about them, rather than the truth.

I experienced this in my Native American History class this summer. When writing about their culture sometimes I would make broad generalizations such as they all lived in tipis and were in war constantly. Things I have seen in Disney’s “Pocahontas.” But after some research, I learned a lot about their culture. Rather than basing my descriptions on previously heard stereotypes, I had to be careful to write researched facts.
