The National Association of Hispanic Journalist

Dionne Buxton

Lab #15

The National Association of Hispanic Journalist’ website focuses on the advancement of Hispanics in all aspects of journalism. Their mission is to make sure Hispanic journalist are recognized as being productive.

The website is also used as a networking avenue for jobs and internships. Hispanic journalist can submit their resume’ and have potential employers contact them. There is a sense of family and brotherhood within NAHJ.

Under the member section of the website, you can apply to become a member of NAHJ. Ironically, the application doesn’t say that you have to be of Hispanic descent. Also in the member section, they highlight members that are doing exceptionally well in their field of study, and those that are giving back to the community from which they come from.

NAHJ also does a lot for their student members. They offer information on internships, and how to obtain them. They also have many scholarships available for the students, equipped with an all expense paid trip to NYC for the scholarship banquet. They also offer a lengthy list of resources that students may use for stories, jobs, and scholarships.

There are NAHJ chapters all over the United States. They offer regular chapters, as well as, University chapters. They have the contact information for each chapter, and the website where the presidents can be reached.

The NAHJ is a valuable tool for not only the Hispanic community, but also the journalism community in its entirety. It is not a place of discrimination against other races, but rather a place to uplift all journalists.
