Writing Journalistically

Leslie Herring

Lab #7

Writing journalistically is challenging for because it differs greatly from the academic style of writing I am used to. For example, I was taught to create lengthy paragraphs with long sentences and sophisticated vocabulary while the journalistic style of writing demands simple, concise writing. This forces me to change my usual methods of writing by presenting the facts in an orderly, clear fashion.

Another challenge I face is using the APA format instead of MLA. I was taught to use as much detail as possible in my writing, whereas journalistic writing follows the inverted pyramid style, presenting the most important facts with other facts for support instead of commentary. Despite the challenges I face with this new style, I am confident that I can master writing journalistically.
