Did my high school prepare me to use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling? I would like to say yes, or at least they tried. I felt that I had a good grasp on it until about three weeks ago when I began my “Writing for Mass Media” course. I feel that every single rule is different in journalistic writing compared to academic style writing. I cannot grasp the concept of brevity. I know that the AP stylebook will eventually be my best friend but right now, that book and I are nothing but enemies. Spelling has really thrown me off.
